How the sunrise and sunset times are worked out
This tool gives the sunrise and sunset times for a place and date from the Sun's position in the sky (an astronomical formula). Choose a city — or tap "use my location" for where you are — and you get sunrise, sunset, the total length of the day and the moment of solar noon, when the Sun stands highest.
It also marks the golden hour, the roughly hour-long window after sunrise and before sunset when the light is especially warm and soft — a favourite of photographers. All of it is calculated locally; nothing is sent anywhere.
Day length through the year
Day length swings with the seasons and your latitude: longest around the summer solstice in June, shortest near the winter solstice in December, and roughly equal day and night at the equinoxes in March and September. The further you are from the equator, the bigger the swing — far enough north or south, you reach the polar day and polar night, when the Sun never sets or never rises.
