Chinese Zodiac Calculator

Which Chinese zodiac animal are you? Enter your birth date to find your animal sign and its element — the calculator accounts for the Chinese New Year, so dates in January and early February come out right.

🔒 Your date never leaves your browser. Nothing is stored or sent.

Good to know — the Chinese year begins at the Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. If you were born in January or early February, use your full birth date for the correct animal. Astrology is for reflection and entertainment.

How the Chinese zodiac calculator works

This Chinese zodiac calculator turns your birth date into your animal sign and its element. The Chinese zodiac runs on a twelve-year cycle of animals — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig — and each year is ruled by one of them. Your year of birth decides which animal you are.

The one thing that trips people up is the start of the year. Unlike the Western calendar, the Chinese year doesn't begin on 1 January; it starts at the Chinese New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. Anyone born before that date belongs to the previous year's animal — which is exactly why this calculator checks the real New Year date for your year rather than guessing.

The five elements

On top of the animal sits one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — which rotate on a longer sixty-year cycle. That's how you end up with combinations like a Water Tiger or a Metal Ox, each adding a second layer of character to the base animal. The calculator works out both from your year for you.

What your animal sign says

Each animal carries a set of traditional traits and a handful of animals it's said to get along with best. Read them as a playful character sketch rather than a rule — like Western star signs, the Chinese zodiac is a lens for reflection and conversation, not a forecast. Enter your date above to see your animal, element and best matches.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Chinese zodiac sign determined?

From your birth year in the 12-year animal cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger and so on). The calculator also checks the Chinese New Year date, since the Chinese year does not begin on 1 January.

What are the five elements?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water rotate through a 60-year cycle and add a second layer to each animal sign — for example a Water Tiger or a Metal Ox.

Why does the Chinese New Year matter?

The Chinese year starts between late January and mid-February. If you were born before that date, you traditionally belong to the previous year's animal — so the full birth date gives the most reliable result.

Can I use just my birth year?

Yes, but if you were born in January or early February, enter your full birth date instead. Otherwise the calculator may place you in the neighbouring year's animal.
